From the very beginning (of the end) I contested the cleaning costs from when I moved out of my mediocre pad at Heatherwood Apartments in South Everett. I wasn’t resistant to the charges because I’m cheap, but because I know the difference between clean and dirty. My mom is a neat freak and she raised me to be one as just like her. When it came time to move-out, I was slapped with a fat cleaning bill, and I couldn’t believe it… well, I could, but not because the apartment wasn’t clean.

They really like to cling to their technical, geographic location inside of Mill Creek, which they do indeed technically have… but if the address is undeniable, why did they direct me through a route to drag me through untold miles of needless suburbs to get there? Oh wait, it’s because they are huge liars, and when they can’t lie to you, the least they can do is mislead you… did it for me, and it worked.

What it Takes to Qualify for Low-Income Tax-Credit
Saturday, October 4th, 2008Heatherwood Apartments operates under a very unique “tax-credit” umbrella, and a lot of prospective tenants misunderstand the requirements of this program. On the surface it sounds plain enough; they have to rent to a specific number of low-income tenants, and as long as they do so, they get a substantial tax credit. It’s enough to more than make up for the discount afforded, but you’re missing the critical element here… you have to be poor, but they DO NOT have to give you a good deal.

Garage Doors Kicked In, Taggers Run Rampant, No Hope In Sight
Friday, October 3rd, 2008Mill Creek is truly an upscale city, no two ways about it. So if you see a Mill Creek address, there is a certain amount of prestige that is assumed. Heatherwood Apartments loves to brag that it’s within the bounds of Mill Creek, but what they don’t like to mention is that Everett city limits aren’t just nearby, they are in fact the property bounds of Heatherwood.

Should I Ignore It, Let It Go To Collections or What?
Wednesday, October 1st, 2008If you move out, whether as an eviction or otherwise, you have to be diligent with your outstanding balance whatever it is. In short, if they say you owe money, you need to pay it. If they say you’re not getting your deposit back, you have to accept it. There are some best practices you can do, and I’ll try to put them in chronological order.

Water & Sewer Charges Beyond Insane
Sunday, September 28th, 2008Before we moved in, we were told in no uncertain terms that the water was included in our rent… mind you, it is, but only in the fact that you pay it straight to management on top of your rent. It’s not included “free”, it’s just included in that you pay it to the front office… that was a bit misleading, and we didn’t find it out until we sat down to sign the lease… but it might be more even than your worst expectations.

Garage Discount Mistruth and Follow-up Failure to Disclose
Saturday, September 27th, 2008When we first moved in, there was a flier in the lobby that had an offer pretty good to entice us to accept a garage unit. We didn’t need one, but we had a few things that needed to go into storage, and since the Pathfinder didn’t have a working lock on the back hatch, we figured it might be worth the while.
We didn’t take the flier, but we both remembered it saying that the first month was free. Apparently, not the case.

Signing the Lease
Thursday, September 25th, 2008When we first found Heatherwood, we couldn’t believe our luck. From before the first day the whole thing seemed too good to be true… and maybe it was.
Despite our good credit (good enough we rented the past two houses without problem, and our credit got no worse) we had to take on a co-signor. It was a real struggle to get one, but my ex-brother-in-law stepped in when others stepped out.

A Word About Charito
Thursday, September 25th, 2008The Heatherwood was a brilliant concept in profitability by whomever conceived it. They get tax credits for permitting that YMCA on site, and far more credits still by catering to Low-Income tenants… but that doesn’t mean they have to give a discount.
They way Low-Income Tax-Credit apartments works has nothing to do with how much the residents pay, but rather, how much they earn.
